Floral on Floral
Mixing florals can feel, at first, like something that requires a particular kind of confidence, the sort of eye that just knows instinctively what will sit happily alongside what. But I have come to believe that this confidence is far more widely held than most people realise, and that the main thing standing between a perfectly good room and a joyful, layered, abundantly alive one is simply the willingness to try.
Tiny blooms alongside large leaves. A delicate pattern next to something altogether bolder. Soft, faded pastels sitting companionably beside deep, saturated shades that might, on paper, seem like they have no business being in the same room let alone the same sofa. The thing is, florals have a way of finding each other, of settling into an easy conversation that feels less designed than discovered, and the results are almost always warmer and more characterful than anything arrived at by playing it safe.
Try it on cushions first, if you are uncertain. Or on table linens, where the commitment feels lighter and the pleasure is immediate. Layer a floral tablecloth beneath mismatched china and a small jug of whatever the garden or the market happened to offer this week, and see what happens to the feeling of the table. Curtains take a little more courage, but the rooms that have them are always the ones you remember.
Florals are not just for spring, though spring does make the case for them particularly well. They are for every ordinary day that deserves a little pattern and pleasure and the sense that someone took the time to make the space feel considered and alive. Which is to say, every day.
Play with them. Let them surprise you. They very often will.
Sending lots of love, Cherry
