The Daily Homebody - Objects Worth Keeping

Objects Worth Keeping

There are certain objects in my home that I cannot imagine being without, and they are rarely the impressive ones. Not the things that were expensive or carefully chosen from somewhere particular, though some of those have earned their place over time, but the quieter ones. The ceramic bowl that has been used so often it has taken on a kind of authority, that feels exactly right in the hands in a way that newer, smoother bowls never quite manage. The fabric scissors that cut with a precision and a satisfying resistance that makes every other pair feel like a disappointment. The book that has been read three times and will be read again, its spine now beautifully broken in the way that spines only get from being genuinely loved.

These objects are not merely useful, though they are that too. They are something closer to companions, things that have been present for enough ordinary days that they have become part of the texture of a life. There is a real relationship with an object like this, built slowly and without drama through the accumulation of all the mornings it was reached for and all the tasks it made a little easier and all the small moments of quiet satisfaction it provided without asking for any attention in return.

Holding onto things like this is its own kind of discernment. It requires noticing, honestly and without sentiment, what actually adds something to your days and what merely occupies space, what you reach for with genuine pleasure and what you reach for only out of habit or obligation. The first kind deserves to stay. The second kind, however attractive or well-intentioned its arrival, deserves to be let go of with some generosity.

The right objects, kept with care and used with appreciation, make life quieter and richer and easier in ways that are almost impossible to quantify. They simply do their work, day after day, without fuss.

That, I think, is the very best thing an object can do.

Sending lots of love, Cherry

The Daily Homebody - Thursday

Ivy Green and White I have always been drawn to ivy green and white, and I have been trying for some time to work out exactly why the combination feels so right to me, so instinctively settled and calm. I think it is something to do with the way the two colours hold each other, the crispness of the white sharpening the green, the green giving the white something warmer and more grounded to lean against. Together they do something that neither quite manages alone. It is a palette I find myself...

The Daily Homebody - Wednesday

Something Sweet, Always I am a firm believer in the small sweet thing, the one that sits on the counter under a cloth or in a tin that gets opened rather more frequently than strictly necessary. The one that was not made for any occasion in particular but simply because the afternoon called for it and the ingredients happened to be there. A tray bake, cut into squares and left somewhere accessible. A batch of biscuits that are slightly too warm when the first one disappears. A handful of...

The Daily Homebody - Tuesday

Floral on Floral Mixing florals can feel, at first, like something that requires a particular kind of confidence, the sort of eye that just knows instinctively what will sit happily alongside what. But I have come to believe that this confidence is far more widely held than most people realise, and that the main thing standing between a perfectly good room and a joyful, layered, abundantly alive one is simply the willingness to try. Tiny blooms alongside large leaves. A delicate pattern next...
